How Aaron Mempin built an art practice around collaboration

Aaron Virata Mempin did not arrive at art through the traditional route.
Before becoming a full-time artist, he spent two decades in the corporate world, working in marketing, brand strategy, and business management. Today, those experiences continue to shape the way he runs his studio and approaches his art practice.
"Marketing taught me that art is not just about the canvas, but also about sustainability and numbers like inventory and reach. This business discipline allows me to manage my studio like a professional enterprise, ensuring that my passion has a solid foundation to grow," he said.
While some artists keep business and creativity in separate corners, Aaron sees value in understanding both. His background allows him to approach art with the same discipline he once applied to the corporate sector, from production management and planning to audience development and long-term growth.
Today, Mempin is known for geometric abstraction, a style built on structure, lines, and composition. He said he was drawn to the genre because of its focus on essentials.
He explained that geometric abstraction removes distractions and allows him to concentrate on balance and structure. Over time, that approach evolved into what he describes as "organized chaos."

"While I began in pure abstraction, I found my trademark in 'organized chaos,' applying geometric lines in my abstract art to invite deeper, more personal conversations," he shared.
Among his notable works is “Pinwheel,” a piece inspired by a visit to the Pililla Wind Farm.
"Pinwheel took me months to finish. I remember the day I passed by the Pililla Wind Farm. It brought me back to my childhood, playing with my friends, blowing pinwheels," he recalled.
The sea is another recurring source of inspiration. Aaron said he often spends time near the water to clear his thoughts, drawing ideas from waves, shorelines, and the horizon.
"The Philippine coastline represents a perfect balance of constant motion and permanent horizons. These landscapes resonate with me because they mirror the flow of collaboration, always moving yet guided by a clear line," he said.
But if there is one idea that runs consistently through his work, it is collaboration.
Over the years, Aaron has worked with Filipino artists including Dominic Rubio, Ronna Manansala, and Quiccs Maiquez. He has also partnered with international artists such as Jarl Cotterink, Tendai Kamwendo, and Huw Richards Evans. Those collaborations helped shape the direction of his practice and reinforced his belief that art can be a shared undertaking.

"Their willingness to engage with my geometric language confirmed that my collaborative philosophy is both a valid and exciting path," he said.
That philosophy is at the center of “Bridges,” an exhibition held at Navitas Haus in Makati City. The show features Mempin alongside teenage artists Zaha Cruz and Nikolai Quiambao.
The venue itself reflects the exhibition's emphasis on learning and exchange. Navitas Haus occupies a house built in the 1970s in Poblacion that has since been repurposed as a learning center. Founded by educator Elo Coronel-Quiambao, it serves as a gathering place for education, conversation, art, and community activities.
For Aaron, the exhibition is also an opportunity to support younger artists.
According to him, artists have the ability to help people engage with ideas and experiences through visual expression. Working with Nikolai Quiambao and Zaha Cruz allowed him to share both his platform and experience while learning from a younger generation of creatives.

"Working with Nik was so refreshing. Her take on the ‘Creation of Adam’ brought a new energy that my geometric lines just naturally flowed with it. It feels like a perfect bridge between her classic inspiration and my modern abstract style," he said.
He expressed a similar appreciation for his collaboration with Zaha.
"I also loved adding my geometric abstract lines to Zaha's colorful sari-sari store because it felt like bringing a modern touch to a classic Filipino scene. It was a joy to see our two different styles could come together to celebrate everyday local life," he added.
The exhibition is one of several projects scheduled for Mempin this year.
Following “Bridges,” he is set to mount a joint exhibition with painter and sculptor Ronna Manansala at Altro Mondo Creative Space in Makati. He will also collaborate with sneaker customization specialist Jeff Cordova of JAAM Customs on a project at Easter Coffee Club in Antipolo, followed by a partnership with jewelry designer Mitzi Parungao of Mitzi Jewels.

Other projects include a follow-up collaboration with Dominic Rubio and participation in Ateneo de Manila University's Lux in Altum exhibition alongside Ricky Francisco, Lala Tuazon, and Hazel Imperian-Tan. “Bridges” is also expected to return in July with additional works and collaborations involving young artists.
Despite a full exhibition calendar, Mempin remains focused on a larger objective.
"The main goal is to promote 'shared authorship' and support the broader creative economy in the Philippines. I advocate for the idea that when painters, designers, and craftsmen work together, the whole industry rises," he said.
Looking ahead, he hopes to explore larger-scale installations, sculpture, and functional design while continuing to represent Filipino creativity through collaborative projects at home and abroad.
Beyond exhibitions and sales, however, Mempin measures success in a different way.
"If my work facilitates meaningful exchanges between people, then I've succeeded," he said.
