BACOLOD CITY – The 79th Infantry Battalion (IB) confirmed the death of a soldier wounded in an encounter with the New People’s Army (NPA) in Barangay Tamlang, Escalante City, Negros Occidental on Monday, June 1.
1st Lt. Fevie Fajardo, 79th IB civil-military operations officer, said the slain soldier, with a rank of private first class, was killed in action due to bullet injuries in the head.
She added that the soldier served as guide of troopers when the encounter occurred at 2:10 p.m. Fajardo said the family of the slain soldier has appealed for privacy during this difficult time.
The firefight was initially reported in Toboso, Negros Occidental but was later confirmed to be within the vicinity of neighboring Escalante City.
A soldier was injured in the hand after hitting a rock during pursuit operation due to the difficult trail in the upland village, according to Fajardo.
Fajardo said they are expecting retaliations from the NPA due to their focused military operations to address insurgency in northern Negros and after the encounter in Toboso that killed 19 individuals.
She stressed that they are on high alert and not complacent. “Nagkataon lang siguro (Maybe it was by chance),” Fajardo said.
Meanwhile, a 41-year-old suspected NPA rebel was arrested in a police checkpoint in Barangay Mabini, Escalante City Monday.
The suspect was flagged down by officers but refused to stop. He abandoned his motorcycle and fled on foot.
During the pursuit, he reportedly drew a caliber .45 firearm, leading to a brief chase and eventually his apprehension.
Police recovered the firearm with a magazine loaded with five bullets.
Fajardo said they are still verifying the identity of the suspect since he came from the route of the encounter.
