The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Tuesday, May 26, ordered a manhunt against the suspects behind the abduction of a car dealer in Cebu City.
PNP Chief, Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. directed intensified follow-up operations after a closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage surfaced online showing the actual taking of the victim on May 11 near the Miranza Center in Banilad, Cebu City.
“The PNP is treating this reported abduction case with utmost urgency and we are committed to determine the facts and identify those responsible,” Nartatez said.
Authorities later confirmed that the victim was found alive the following morning in the City of Naga, Cebu after being abandoned by his captors.
He was safely recovered although the circumstances of his release remain under investigation.
Investigators are now looking into whether the incident stemmed from a personal financial transaction or a criminal kidnapping operation.
The victim reportedly told police the incident may be connected to a man he was dealing with in a vehicle transaction worth P1.8 million, along with an alleged unpaid interest amounting to P150,000.
Police are also examining possible links to “rent-tangay” and “rent-sangla” schemes involving vehicle rentals and pawning arrangements that have previously surfaced in parts of Central Visayas.
A person of interest has already been identified as authorities continue to build the case.
“I have directed PRO-7 [Police Regional Office in Central Visayas] and the Cebu City Police Office to fast-track the investigation and preserve all possible evidence to ensure swift case resolution,” Nartatez said.
As part of the investigation, police units in Central Visayas have begun securing CCTV footage from establishments around Banilad and mapping possible escape routes used during the abduction.
Specialized units have also been tapped to assist in tracing vehicle movements captured on surveillance systems.
“We assure the public and the business community in Metro Cebu that the PNP remains fully committed to maintaining peace and order, and we will not allow criminal elements to sow fear in the community,” Nartatez said.
