Malacañang said it will not make any prejudgment in the upcoming impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.
"Ang Malacañang, ang Palasyo at ang Pangulo ay hindi po magbibigay ng anumang prejudgment (Malacañang, the Palace, and the President will not issue any form of prejudgment)," Palace Press Officer and Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro said on Monday, May 25, when asked if the Palace believes that the evidence presented so far against the Vice President is sufficient to justify impeachment before the Senate.
Castro said evidence must be fully presented once the trial begins, and tiw will be for the people and the senator-judges to judge.
The evidence must be fully presented when the impeachment trial begins. And it will be the people who will judge, except, of course, for the senator-judges. They will be the ones to decide what the evidence contains and whether a vice president should be held accountable for the accusations being made against her)," Castro said.
When asked whether the Palace would support a broader investigation, regardless of political party or government allies, in case new evidence comes out in the Senate hearing that would link government officials to corruption, Castro said the Marcos administration will uphold its principle that those who must be held accountable must be held accountable.
Kung may mga nangyari na pagtulog sa pagpapanagot ng mga sangkot sa mga nakaraang administrasyon, hindi po iyan ang gagawin ng administrasyon na ito (One of the things this administration, under President Marcos Jr., upholds is that those who should be held accountable must be held accountable; it will not be ignored. If there were instances in the past where accountability was ignored for those involved in previous administrations, that is not what this administration will do)," Castro said.
He has already started investigations into corruption, and this should continue even after his term ends. Hopefully it continues, and those who should be held accountable will not be allowed to escape responsibility)," Castro added.
Duterte's impeachment trial will start on July 6.
