BACOLOD CITY – Police said that 30-year-old New People's Army rebel Vince Francis Dingding from Cebu City was buried in a public cemetery in Barangay Isio, Cauayan, Negros Occidental on Sunday, May 24, a week after he was killed along with four communist rebels in an encounter with the military in Cauayan on May 16.
Brig. Gen. Jason Jumawan, commander of the 302nd Infantry Brigade (IBde), said that the municipal government and the police facilitated Dingding’s interment, despite the efforts of the military to persuade his parents to claim his remains and bring them to his hometown.
“Ayaw talaga ng parents, kahit ako kinausap ko din sila, pero ayaw na talaga (His parents vehemently refused),” Jumawan said on Monday, May 25.
Jumawan said that Dingding’s parents just asked to see their son’s interment through a video call. “Iyon lang ang hiniling nila (That’s what they asked),” he added.
The National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC) said that Dingding’s parents through a handwritten letter said they would no longer claim his remains in the province to spare their family from further distress.
Colleagues and friends of Dingding, an alumnus of the University of the Philippines (UP)-Cebu, went to Cauayan last week to visit his remains but said they were barred by authorities.
Jumawan said that only Dingding’s immediate family can see and claim his remains under the law. “Who are they? Only the family is allowed,” he stressed.
Barangay Capitol Site, Cebu City Captain Kelly Quijada said Dingding’s parents were not threatened to write and sign the letter and asked them for a written consent about their son. “They did it willfully,” he added.
Progressive groups, friends, and colleagues of Dingding mourned his death in a candle-lighting and a vigil in Cebu City over the weekend.
Dingding was secretary of the Southwest Negros Guerrilla Front (SWF) and former political guide in 2018 before becoming a full-time fighter.
Meanwhile, an NPA militiaman surrendered to the 2nd Negros Occidental Provincial Mobile Force Company on Saturday, May 23.
The rebel returnee was a member of the dismantled Central Negros 2, Komiteng Rehiyon-Negros, Cebu, Bohol, Siquijor (KR-NCBS), the Police Regional Office-Negros Island Region (PRO-NIR) said.
He was provided a sack of rice and financial assistance from PRO-NIR before he was released to his family.
An NPA rebel also surrendered in Barangay Panciao, Manjuyod, Negros Oriental on May 18.
