Impeachment: Justice above politics

The impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte should be a defining moment for Philippine democracy, a constitutional exercise designed to test accountability at the highest levels of government. Instead, it risks becoming another chapter in the country’s escalating political turmoil fueled by factional hostility, personality cults, and public outrage amplified by spectacle. The bizarre shooting incident inside the premises of the Senate, which was set to constitute as an impeachment court at that time, only deepened the sense that institutions meant to embody order and stability are now trapped in chaos and distrust.
This is the greater danger confronting the nation. When democratic processes cease to be instruments of justice and instead become arenas for political vengeance and payback time, the entire public loses faith in governance itself.
Impeachment is not designed to settle political rivalries. It is not a campaign rally disguised as legal procedure, nor a televised contest between political dynasties and alliances. It is a constitutional mechanism rooted in evidence, accountability, and due process. Once the trial devolves into emotional grandstanding and partisan warfare, its legitimacy weakens regardless of the verdict.
The senator-judges now carry an enormous responsibility. They must resist the temptation to perform for cameras, social media audiences, or political benefactors. Their duty is not to protect friendships, repay political debts, or position themselves for future elections. They are called to act as guardians of institutional credibility. Every question asked, every ruling issued, and every statement delivered must demonstrate impartiality and discipline. The credibility of the Senate itself hangs in the balance.
Likewise, the congressman-prosecutors must avoid turning the proceedings into a public relations campaign. Their task is to present facts clearly, methodically, and responsibly. Evidence, not rhetoric, must carry the case. If prosecutors appear driven more by political ambition than constitutional duty, they risk weakening the very accountability they claim to uphold.
Other government officials must also exercise restraint. Cabinet members, local executives, political allies, and administration figures should avoid inflammatory rhetoric that pressures the court of public opinion before the impeachment court itself reaches a conclusion. Public institutions should not become weapons for political demolition. The government must continue functioning despite political turbulence. Economic management, public services, infrastructure, education, disaster preparedness, and national security cannot be neglected while political elites wage war.
The private sector also plays an important role that extends beyond watching from the sidelines. Businesses and investors depend on institutional stability, predictability, and public trust. Political instability discourages investment, slows expansion, weakens markets, and raises concerns about governance. Corporate leaders, business organizations, and civic institutions should encourage respect for constitutional processes and reject efforts to inflame divisions for political gain. Silence in moments of democratic strain can become complicity in institutional decline.
Most importantly, ordinary Filipinos, whether supporters or critics of the Vice President, must resist the dangerous instinct to treat politics as tribal warfare. Democracy cannot survive when citizens believe loyalty to personalities matters more than loyalty to truth and the country. Supporters should not automatically dismiss allegations as persecution, while critics should not assume guilt before evidence is tested. Justice requires patience, discipline, and openness to facts, even when those facts challenge deeply held political loyalties.
The impeachment trial must proceed without intimidation, mob pressure, or blind allegiance. The evidence must speak louder than surnames, alliances, and social media narratives.
In the end, this trial is bigger than one vice president. It is a test of whether Philippine democracy still possesses the maturity to place law above politics and institutions above personalities. Respect for due process must remain paramount. Justice must be pursued regardless of whose ambitions are damaged, whose alliances collapse, or whose political future is altered.
Only then can public trust be restored.
