BUTUAN CITY – Four New People’s Army (NPA) rebels surrendered in the Caraga region over the weekend.
Lt. Col. Joe Patrick A. Martinez Jr., 4th Infantry (Diamond) Division Public Affairs Office (PAO) chief, said they yielded to the 401st Infantry Brigade following the recent death of a high-ranking NPA leader.
“Hardship, hunger, no more leadership, lack of logistical support, and tired of running in the mountains are the main reason for their coming back to the fold of the government,” said Martinez.
They turned over guns, bullets, equipment, and magazines.
Col. Glenn Joy U. Aynera, commanding officer of the 401st Brigade, said they surrendered after realizing the futility of the armed struggle and the continuous setbacks suffered by their organization in the region.
“Their surrender is considered another significant blow to the weakening communist terrorist movement operating in Caraga region,” Aynera said. “The recent death of their leader Commander Waco after an encounter on May 11 further demoralized remaining members, prompting them to abandon the armed movement and return to the folds of the law.”
Major Gen. Marion T. Angcao, 4th ID chief, said their continued surrender reflects the declining support and deteriorating condition of the group.
“The surrender of these individuals manifests the weakening capability and diminishing morale of the communist terrorist group following the loss of their leaders. We assure all those who wish to return to the folds of the law that the government is ready to help them start a peaceful and productive life,” he added.
