'Police asset' wounded in Cebu City shooting

CEBU CITY – A 38-year-old man and his nephew were arrested for allegedly shooting and wounding a fish vendor in Barangay Labangon here.
Francis and Ricky, 21, were apprehended less than 24 hours after shooting Lina, 50, aboard a motorcycle on Tres de Abril at dawn Friday, May 15.
Police Col. George Ylanan, chief of the Cebu City Police Office, said personal grudge was the motive of the attack as the suspects accused the victim of being a police asset.
Police said the victim was shot with a .45 caliber pistol in the back with the bullet exiting in the neck. The victim is in stable condition, police said.
Lawmen were able to identify and track down the suspects after their faces were revealed by a security camera footage that captured the attack. The suspects were also identified by witnesses, police added.
Police said Ricky drove the getaway motorcycle while Francis was the gunman.
Investigation said Francis accused the victim of reporting him to authorities as a drug pusher.
“That was his presumption. He was a subject of an anti-illegal drug operation a few days ago but was able to escape,” said Ylanan.
Ylanan added that Francis was out on bail for frustrated murder.
Interviewed by reporters, Francis admitted that he suspected the victim of being a police asset.
Francis said he decided to get back at Linda, saying the victim has reported him twice to the police.
He denied that his nephew was involved in the attack. He said he just asked his nephew to drive for him without telling him of his plan to waylay the victim.
Francis also denied that he was involved in selling illegal drugs.
