Friends, close friends falling into the pits of love, is a recurring theme in our movies. Think Jolina Magdangal and Marvin Agustin in "Labs Kita, Okay Ka Lang?," the now-classic “friendzone” love story inspired by their real-life relationship. Then, comes along "Almost Us," a more contemporized re-telling of a similar, tangential theme by director Dan Villegas.
"Almost Us," which opened May 6, tells an engaging story of male-female friendship that teases playfully and naughtily, then also, alternately, seriously now, the narrow boundaries between platonic love and romantic desire.
The roles are played wonderfully, naturally well, by newcomers JM Ibarra and Fyang Smith, fresh off their winning streak in "Pinoy Big Brother." Both actors conduct themselves very well in this their debut as the leads of a movie they can call their own. Prior, the couple played second lead in two other pictures. They’re also in the new Prime Video series, "Love is Never Gone."
At the May 5 premiere at SM Megamall, I realized how the JM-Fyang tandem has cornered a sizeable fan base. Young people swarmed all over the cinema corridors, screaming their hearts out. I was reminded of similar scenes in previous lifetimes. Indeed, every generation brings forth a new set of idols, and together with them, a new set of fans. Both will come and go with time passing.
Watch the Regal film for its vibrant, feel-good, youthful vibe and feel young at heart all over again.
