8th ID backs US Embassy warning on Americans joining rebels

TACLOBAN CITY – The 8th Infantry Division (ID) has expressed support for the recent security advisory issued by the United States Embassy in the Philippines, warning Americans against engaging with or supporting designated terrorist organizations, particularly in Eastern Visayas.
In a statement on Wednesday, the 8th ID described the advisory as “timely and relevant,” citing ongoing attempts by communist rebels to exploit foreign nationals through indirect support networks in the provinces of Samar and Leyte.
According to the 8th ID, these activities may involve channeling resources or funding – sometimes unwittingly – into activities that could benefit armed groups. Such involvement, intentional or not, may pose legal and security risks under Philippine laws.
“Any form of collaboration, material support, or facilitation benefiting terrorist organizations – such as the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army (CPP-NPA) – is a clear violation of the law and undermines ongoing peace and development efforts,” the 8th ID stated.
The 8th ID said Eastern Visayas continues to make progress toward lasting peace and development, as communities increasingly reject extremist ideologies. It warned that external support for these groups could delay the region’s advancement.
The 8th ID echoed the embassy’s call for foreign nationals to exercise due diligence, respect local laws, and ensure their engagements and partnerships remain transparent, lawful, and aligned with legitimate development efforts.
Earlier, the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC) said the US Embassy in Manila's security alert warning its citizens about the dangers posed by the NPA is a recognition that Americans are being drawn into violence by organizations linked to the communist insurgents.
