Over 700 persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) at the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City are seeking early release, the Department of Justice (DOJ) said on Tuesday, May 5.
This was determined following a Katrungan Caravan that was held at the NBP last April 30 that provided free legal assistance to inmates.
“During the caravan, PDLs received guidance on key legal matters, including the grant of Good Conduct Time Allowance (GCTA), parole, executive clemency, appeals, and other available legal remedies,” said the department.
“By the end of the activity, more than 700 PDLs were successfully served and assisted, the highest number of assisted PDLs in the initiative's history,” it disclosed.
The caravan was led by DOJ Usec. Margarito N. Gutierrez and participated by 100 volunteer lawyers and law students.
“This is a reaffirmation of our commitment to deliver real justice for all, without reservation or hesitation, reaching the most in need, even those languishing inside prisons,” stated DOJ Acting Sec. Fredderick A. Vida.
The DOJ launched its Katarungan Caravan in 2024 which is aimed at bringing closer to communities and PDLs free legal counsel and government services .
