The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) said it has released more than ₱117 million in assistance to families affected by the ongoing unrest of Mayon Volcano in Albay.
DSWD Assistant Secretary and spokesperson Irene Dumlao said on Monday, May 4, that the assistance included food packs, non-food items, psychosocial services, and cash support for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in affected areas.
Based on the agency’s latest data, DSWD has distributed 71,153 family food packs, 7,634 non-food items, and 1,402 ready-to-eat food packs to affected families.
It also released more than ₱45 million in cash-for-work assistance to over 3,400 beneficiaries, including farmers and displaced residents whose livelihoods were disrupted by volcanic activity.
“Ang ginawa po kasi natin sa mga farmers na lumikas doon sa evacuation centers ay, it’s either nagtanim po sila sa mga vacant plots sa compound o sila ay nagpastol ng kanilang mga alagang hayop. Kaya doon sa labor na ginagawa nila, nagbigay tayo ng tulong pinansiyal using cash-for-work muna. Ito ay upang matiyak na itong mga farmers natin ay patuloy na makakapag-hanapbuhay (For farmers who evacuated to centers, some planted crops in available plots or tended livestock. For this labor, we provided financial assistance through cash-for-work to help them sustain their livelihoods),” Dumlao said.
The agency also provided emergency cash transfers of more than ₱10,000 per family to help cover other immediate needs not met by food and non-food assistance.
“Ito naman pong emergency cash transfer, this is an unconditional cash transfer na pino-provide naman po natin para po matulungan tustusan ang iba pang mga pangangailangan nitong ating mga internally displaced persons (This emergency cash transfer is an unconditional aid provided to help cover other needs of internally displaced persons),” she added.
As of the latest monitoring, 1,444 families or 5,459 individuals remain in 14 evacuation centers across Albay, particularly in Camalig and Malilipot towns, and Ligao and Tabaco cities.
DSWD said it is coordinating with local government units to ensure adequate ventilation and cooling in evacuation centers amid high temperatures.
It added that it has more than 1.6 million family food packs in stock nationwide, including over 270,000 prepositioned in the Bicol Region for possible augmentation.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported on Saturday, May 2, a series of pyroclastic density currents accompanied by ash emissions triggered by lava collapse at Mayon Volcano.
