Reigning champion National University and the gritty University of Santo Tomas clash for the coveted Finals berth in the UAAP Season 88 women’s volleyball tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Saturday, May 2.
In a rematch of the Season 86 Finals, the three-peat-seeking Lady Bulldogs and the determined Golden Tigresses take the spotlight at the Big Dome, with a spot in the championship round up for grabs in their 3 p.m. encounter.
The winner will face the unbeaten De La Salle University, which is on a long break after securing its ticket by sweeping the elimination.
On record, the Regine Diego-mentored crew has the upper hand over UST after winning twice in their last two encounters. However, momentum has shifted with the Golden Tigresses eliminating the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws in a sudden death and the Adamson Lady Falcons in the stepladder round one.
Since the exit of Bella Bellen and Alyssa Solomon, Alinsug took over the leadership with the help of her fellow veterans in co-Finals MVP Shaira Jardio and seasoned setter Lams Lamina. Their arsenal also went balanced as Rookie of the Year Sam Cantada, Arah Panique, Chams Maaya, and Alexa Mata provided the support offensively.
The Tigresses, with fatigue possibly playing a factor, remain a danger with Angge Poyos anchoring the offense and Reg Jurado, Xyza Gula, and Jonna Perdido giving timely contributions.
Gagawin din namin ‘yon, try and try lang hanggang sa makuha namin [against NU]," she added.
