Malacañang has denied allegations that the government is withholding information on the case of fugitive Zaldy Co, saying any limitations in disclosure are due to foreign legal restrictions.
In a press briefing on Thursday, April 30, Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Undersecretary Claire Castro said the Palace has nothing to hide regarding developments abroad.
“Wala pong tinatago ang gobyerno (The government is not hiding anything),” she said, addressing speculation surrounding Co’s status in Europe.
Castro explained that Czech and French officials could not provide further details due to their domestic and international legal obligations.
“Hindi po sila makakapagbigay ng impormasyon… dahil sa kanilang batas (They cannot provide information due to their laws),” she said.
She added that even Philippine officials who sought additional information were not given further details.
Castro likewise confirmed that Co was previously detained by Czech authorities due to invalid travel documents. She said this was also relayed directly to President Marcos by Czech Chargé d’Affaires Eva Tenzin.
“Talagang na-detain si Mr. Zaldy Co sa Czech Republic dahil sa invalid travel documents (He was indeed detained in the Czech Republic due to invalid travel documents),” she said.
Release ‘unsatisfactory’
Castro said President Marcos was disappointed over Co’s release from custody and his continued presence in Europe.
She described the outcome as “very unsatisfactory,” noting that communication from Czech authorities stopped despite ongoing coordination.
Extradition, cooperation pushed
The President has called for stronger police and judicial cooperation to ensure Co’s return to the Philippines.
Castro said Marcos emphasized that fugitives should not evade accountability due to gaps in international coordination.
The Palace reiterated that the government will pursue all legal and diplomatic means to bring Co back to face graft and malversation charges.
Asylum concerns
Castro said there was no confirmation from French authorities regarding any asylum application by Co.
She warned against speculation, saying the Palace can only disclose verified information.
