A prison facility worth P480 million is set to rise in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan as the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) continue to address congestion of persons deprived of liberty (PDLs).
BuCor Director General Gregorio Pio P. Catapang Jr. led the groundbreaking ceremony of the construction project on April 28 in Sitio Tagbarungis in Brgy Inagawan, Puerto Princesa City.
“Once completed, it will house up to 2,500 PDLs in an environment conducive to rehabilitation, focusing on humane treatment, safety, and operational efficiency,” Catapang told guests and participants including Sen. Erwin Tulfo during the event.
The BuCor chief called the groundbreaking ceremony “a milestone in the government’s commitment to create a secure, orderly, and future-ready environment that not only ensures safe custody but also fosters reformation and opportunity for Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs).”
Also present during the event were representatives of the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP).
The new facility will be built at a 10-hectare property in the Inagawan Sub-Colony (ISC) of the Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm (IPPF).
Catapang said the facility will integrate sustainable technologies including the use of rooftop solar panels and solar-powered street lighting systems aimed at promoting energy efficiency and reduce the carbon footprint of prison operations.
“Such green initiatives are expected to lower operational costs over the long term while contributing positively to environmental conservation efforts,” said the director general.
“This integration of technology and sustainability further reflects BuCor’s awareness of global trends and its commitment to innovation within the corrections sector,” he added.
