The six-peat-seeking Bulldogs came out inspired from the get-go, with Buds Buddin making sure to lift his team to victory despite some resistance from the Golden Spikers.
With its win, NU, which recovered from its back-to-back losses ahead of playoff for the No. 2 spot game against UST, forged a Final rematch against Far Eastern University, which eliminated a feisty Ateneo side, 25-23, 20-25, 16-25, 25-17, 15-12, earlier.
The Bulldogs bested the Tamaraws in sudden death of Season 87 Finals.
The Sampaloc-based squad extended its historic Finals streak to 11 – the most by any team in the men’s side – with head coach Dante Alinsurin going for his 8th overall crown with the Bulldogs.
“‘Yong experience talaga, kaya lumamang kami this year, nakuha kaagad namin ‘yong game, kaya laking pasalamat ko sa mga players pati sa mga coaches na nandyan para mapaganda ‘yong game,” said Alinsunurin. “‘Yong six-peat na ‘yan ‘di kami nagfo-focus diyan… basta kami trabahuhin lang namin.”
Buddin spearheaded the Bulldogs’ assault off 19 points built on 17 attacks and two blocks with one dig and 18 excellent receptions, while Jade Disquitado collected 11 points, five digs, and 10 receptions. Leo Ordiales added nine points.
“Nagpapasalamat po ako sa mga teammates ko kahit mahirap ‘yong situation kinapitan nila, sabay-sabay kaming lumaban,” said Disquitado. “Sunod lang talaga kami sa mga coaches and tiwala sa mga teammates.”
“Siguro, ‘yong unang-una naming gagawin is mag-rest… ‘yong FEU is best team this season dapat mag-focus kami lalo sa training, para pagdating ng game pulido na kami,” Buddin stressed.
Taking the spotlight as well for NU were Greg Ancheta who delivered 23 excellent sets, one point, and one dig, and Jimwell Gapultos, who logged 14 excellent digs and 10 excellent receptions.
Two-time MVP Josh Ybañez struggled offensively for UST as he scored nine points with four digs and 16 receptions.
