Far Eastern University displayed steely nerves and survived Ateneo, 25-23, 20-25, 16-25, 25-17, 15-12, to book its Finals berth in the UAAP Season 88 men’s volleyball tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum Wednesday, April 29.
Down 1-2 heading into the fourth set, the Tamaraws regained their form with Dryx Saavedra and Amet Bituin forming a lethal 1-2 combo to dismantle the Blue Eagles' defense before they went full throttle in the decider to prevent a semis rubber match.
With its gritty victory, FEU secured its second straight Finals appearance where it is aiming to claim the title after bowing to reigning champion National University in Season 87.
The Tamaraws now await their championship opponent, either against the Bulldogs or the University of Santo Tomas Golden Spikers, who are battling in another semis pairing as of presstime.
“Lagi naming sinasabi this is UAAP, ‘di lahat mananalo, hats off ‘to coach Vince [Mangulabnan], kaya dapat matutukan namin ng bawat pansin ‘yong mga tao namin,” said FEU head coach Eddieson Orcullo. “Salamat sa Ateneo kasi binigyan kami ng magandang laro. “Sa mga boys naman kailangan pa naming paghusayan.”
Saavedra topscored for the Morayta-based squad with 14 points – all coming from attacks – with three excellent digs and one excellent reception, while Bituin posted 12 points, five digs, and 10 receptions.
Lirick Mendoza and Mikko Espartero provided the support offensively with 12 and 11 points, respectively, with the latter also listing three digs and 15 receptions. Ariel Cacao, for his part, tallied 26 excellent sets, four points, and one dig.
Emmanuel Okeke scored 24 points for Ateneo, while Batas uncorked 15 points along with two digs and 15 receptions.
