DSWD gives assistance, condolences after motorcycle taxi driver dies while lining up for cash aid

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has extended assistance to the family of a motorcycle taxi driver who collapsed and later died while waiting in line for a special payout for drivers in Quezon City on Saturday, April 18.
The payout at the Quezon Memorial Circle (QMC) forms part of an ongoing DSWD cash relief assistance program where public utility vehicle drivers receive P5,000 each to help cushion the impact of rising fuel costs.

DSWD Assistant Secretary and spokesperson Irene Dumlao said Secretary Rex Gatchalian immediately instructed the mobilization of support after being informed of the incident by the Quezon City Response Team on Saturday.
“We’ve heard of the unfortunate at nakakalungkot na incident yesterday and Secretary Rex immediately instructed a team to reach out to the family. Nakausap na namin ang anak at tutulungan namin sila magkaroon ng maayos na pagpapalibing sa tatay nila. All other assistance will also be extended (We’ve heard of the unfortunate and saddening incident yesterday [April 19] and Secretary Rex immediately instructed a team to reach out to the family. We have spoken with the child and we will help ensure a proper burial for their father. All other assistance will also be extended),” Dumlao said.
On Sunday, April 19, the agency said it immediately coordinated with concerned offices after receiving reports of the incident, which occurred during the queue for government assistance at the QMC.
Gatchalian directed the DSWD-National Capital Region to coordinate with the hospital, the driver’s family, and his employer to ensure the prompt delivery of assistance.
He also personally met with the bereaved family at the hospital to convey the agency’s condolences and assess their immediate needs.
“Lubos kaming nakikiramay sa pamilya ng ating nasawing drayber (We extend our deepest condolences to the family of our deceased driver),” the DSWD said.
The agency said it is providing assistance for hospital expenses, funeral arrangements, and transportation for relatives.
Gatchalian also said educational assistance will be extended to support the continued schooling of the driver’s child.
He added that additional assistance may still be provided depending on the family’s assessed needs, as coordination with local response teams continues.
