There is no doubt that Angel Canino and Shevana Laput have stayed true to their words as De La Salle University continues its dominant run in the UAAP Season 88 women’s volleyball tournament, moving one victory away from an outright Finals berth.
Most importantly, they are just three wins from reclaiming the crown after falling short in the past two seasons.
Their next opponent is reigning champion NU Lady Bulldogs this Sunday, April 19 at Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City. But, regardless of who stands on the other side, the Lady Spikers remain unfazed as they remain focused on sharpening and executing their game plan.
“That’s what the coaches instilled in us, one game at a time. We don’t worry about this streak that we have, 13-0,” said Laput, who anchored La Salle past UE, 25-20, 25-18, 25-15, for their 13th straight win.
“We worry about how we perform and if we perform what we have done in training, being disciplined and staying true to the system that coaches are teaching us,” she added.
It can be recalled that the Taft-based squad emerged victorious with a 25-21, 25-19, 19-25, 25-17 triumph over NU to complete its first-round sweep. There, Canino, Laput, and Amie Provido took the steering for La Salle.
The triumvirate got ample support from second stringer hitter Dominique Caringal and Shane Reterta, while rookie setter Eshana Nunag dazzled with 22 excellent sets. Likewise, libero Lyka De Leon shone off 11 excellent digs and 12 excellent receptions.
Those contributions disabled efforts from rising star Sam Cantada, Chams Maaya, Arah Panique, Alexa Mata, and Shaira Jardio while limiting Vange Alinsug offensively for NU.
“Of course, in every game that we come into, becoming into with aggressiveness that we want to win. No matter what we go in there,” Laput continued.
“With the same mindset of whoever this team is, we will do our best to play our game and like coaches saying, focus on our sarili. Staying true to the Lady Spikers’ win,” she added.
Also, for Laput, beating the Lady Bulldogs and completing the 'sweet sweep' in the elims is a proof of the Lady Spikers' hard work and discipline in the entirety of this season.
"It's the testament of our discipline, really. Discipline is the one word that I will keep saying throughout this entire season, because that's what you see in our team right now," Laput stressed.
"And we're staying disciplined to the system that we have... to ourself, and working hard... this whole season is a testament of our discipline, and we'll see how far we go," she added.
In case they outlast the Lady Bulldogs, the Lady Spikers will automatically earn a finals ticket.
