CEBU CITY – A major educational institution here will not implement a tuition increase for the upcoming school year.
The University of Cebu (UC) on Tuesday, April 7, announced that there will be no tuition increase for the school year 2026-2027 amid the global cost pressures caused by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
In a press briefing, UC Chairman Augusto Go said the measure is aimed at helping ease the burden on students, employees, and their families.
“Education should not become heavier at a time when families are already carrying so much. This is our way of standing with our students and their parents,” said Go.
Go disclosed that UC actually applied for a tuition increase but decided to go against it amid rising fuel costs.
He said the school “can afford” not to implement a tuition increase “because we have the volume.”
Freezing tuition will not only help students but also school’s employees, Go said.
Go said that a low enrollment rate caused by rising costs will affect the school’s capability to maintain its workforce.
“If we increase tuition, there will be fewer students. I want to help my employees also,” Go said.
Go said the conflict in the Middle East is not expected to end anytime soon and it is important that necessary measures have to be taken.
“This problem will not end this year. I can’t promise you everything but I can alleviate it,” said Go.
Go introduced a motorcycle loan program for employees in the Augusto W. Go Group. He said the program will offer low interest rates, giving the employees affordable transportation options.
“I am at the terminal term of my life. I am already 91. I want to do something good and this is what I want to do,” Go said.
