Iwahig Prison personnel wear black armbands to mourn death of colleague in Palawan 'shootout'
Personnel of the Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm (IPPF) in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan have started wearing black armbands to mourn and sympathize with the family of slain Corrections Officer Jason O. Talon.
Talon’s remains were brought last Monday, April 6, to the St. Joseph the Worker Parish within IPPF.
“As a symbol of mourning and solidarity, all IPPF personnel are wearing black armbands in remembrance of their departed colleague,” the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) said.
Talon died during an alleged shootout in his neighborhood in Barangay Irawan in Puerto Princesa City last Friday night, April 3. The “shootout” also resulted in the death of two policemen -- Police Staff Sergeants Ryan Cris Cabaña and Jayson Fernandez.
Earlier, BuCor Director General Gregorio Pio Catapang Jr. has asked the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to conduct a probe.
He also asked the bureau’s Intelligence and Investigation Division Chief Ferdinand V. Balduman to conduct a parallel investigation.
Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. had also ordered an investigation of the incident.
Nartatez directed the detention of four policemen who were among those who responded to the incident after receiving reports that some of those who responded were not in uniform and were reportedly under the influence of liquor.
