PH to continue engagement with Myanmar, backs ASEAN peace efforts—Palace

Malacañang said the Philippines will continue engaging Myanmar authorities and stakeholders following recent political developments in the Southeast Asian nation.

In a message to reporters, Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Undersecretary Claire Castro said the government has taken note of the election of Min Aung Hlaing as president.

“The Philippines will continue to engage relevant authorities and stakeholders in Myanmar through [Department of] Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro,” she said.

Lazaro is also the Special Envoy of the ASEAN Chair to Myanmar.

She added that Philippine embassies will also remain involved in ongoing efforts.

Support for ASEAN initiatives

The Palace official reiterated the country’s commitment to ASEAN-led efforts to address the situation in Myanmar.

“The Philippines remains committed to support ASEAN’s collective efforts,” Castro said.

Castro called for renewed momentum in implementing ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus.

This includes achieving a cessation of violence and ensuring the delivery of humanitarian assistance to affected communities.

The Palace said the Philippines will continue working with regional partners to promote peace and stability in Myanmar.

Myanmar’s military chief, Min Aung Hlaing, was elected president in April 2026 through a parliamentary vote dominated by pro-military lawmakers, formalizing his grip on power five years after leading a coup that ousted the elected government.
