500 transferred PDLs now at Iwahig Prison in Palawan -- BuCor
The 500 persons deprived of liberty (PDLs), who were transferred last Friday, March 27, from the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City, arrived on Sunday morning, March 29, at the Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm (IPPF) in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan.
Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) Director General Gregorio Pio P. Catapang Jr. said the transferred PDLs are now the first occupants of a newly constructed dormitory at the IPPF.
Catapang said the new dormitory is “a state-of-the-art facility” which has a capacity of up to 1,000 PDLs.
He also said the expansion of IPPF’s physical facilities is “a commitment to improving the quality of life for inmates by providing safer, cleaner, and more organized living conditions.”
Earlier, Catapang had said the continuing transfer of NBP’s PDLs is aimed at balancing inmate population distribution, reducing overcrowding, and enhancing security.
He said that 7,500 more NBP’s PDLs will be transferred to other operating prison and penal farms (OPPFs) to decongest the NBP for its planned conversion to a government center starting 2028.
