CEBU CITY – A 42-year-old man died while his companion was wounded when a security guard went on a shooting spree in Barangay Calamba here on Friday morning, March 27.
Vicente Gemuta suffered three bullet wounds in the head and body. He was declared dead at the Cebu City Medical Center.
The second victim, Renato Belanizo, 52, sustained bullet wounds in the body.
The suspect, Joel Rentuma, a 47-year-old security guard at A Plus Towing Services, was arrested after the incident.
Police said the suspect is an ex-convict who was jailed in 2011 for a homicide case. He was released from jail in 2021.
Police said the suspect claimed that he got fed up after the two victims bullied him.
Police Staff Sgt. Ryan Panugaling of the Sawang Calero Police Station said the suspect admitted that there was no confrontation before the shooting.
“The reason was petty. He said he heard the victims laughing while staring at him,” Panugaling said in Cebuano.
The suspect was on-duty at the time of the incident.
Police said the victims were sitting on a bench by the road across the establishment where the suspect was detailed.
Police said while the victims were chatting, the suspect crossed the road, approached the two victims and started firing.
A .38 revolver believed to have been used in the attack was recovered, police said.
Murder and frustrated murder charges will be filed against the suspect, police said.
