Manila LGU starts distribution of fuel subsidy to over 20,000 delivery riders
A total of 21,127 delivery riders operating in Manila are being targeted to receive the P5,000 fuel subsidy from the national government starting on Thursday, March 26, as part of its efforts in alleviating the adverse economic effects of the Middle East war in the country, particularly on the steep surge in fuel prices in recent weeks.
According to Manila Mayor Francisco "Isko Moreno" Domagoso, the payout for delivery riders will continue until tomorrow, March 27, at the Kartilya ng Katipunan near the Manila City Hall.
"Sa koordinasyon ng Manila Department of Social Welfare and Development (MDSW) at Manila Traffic and Parking Bureau (MTPB), makatatanggap ang bawat kwalipikadong driver ng tig-P5,000 na tulong mula sa Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), sa ilalim ng Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situations (AICS) program, katuwang ang Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) (In coordination with the Manila Department of Social Welfare and Development and the Manila Traffic and Parking Bureau, each qualified driver will receive P5,000 in assistance from the Department of Social Welfare and Development, under the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situations program, in partnership with the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board)," Domagoso said.
During the payout, several beneficiaries expressed their gratitude to the local and national government for the fuel subsidy, saying that the amount can go a long way, especially with these trying times.
"Malaking tulong po ito kasi lately talagang talo ho ako sa kita sa sobrang laki ng tinaas ng gas. Halos kalahati or lagpas kalahati pa minsan ng kita ko yung nagagastos ko sa gasolina kaya ilang araw na hong kulang yung baon ng anak ko sa school (This subsidy is really a big help for me because we are already losing a big part of my earnings to the continuous fuel price hikes. Half, or in some cases, more than half of my earnings go to fuel expenses, affecting my daughter's allowance in school)," 32-year-old Joel Singaleng said.
While some are grateful, a couple of riders lamented the amount given for the fuel subsidy, saying that the money isn't enough for them as the prices of fuel continuously increase further and faster.
"Kulang na kulang ho tong P5,000 para sakin. Sa tindi ng taas ng gasolina ngayon, pang dalawa o tatlong araw lang itatagal nitong ayuda na ito. Mas maganda ho sana kung pabababain nalang nila yung presyo ng gas, ayun mas may sense sakin yun (This P5,000 subsidy is not enough for me. With the extremely high prices of gasoline these days, this cash aid will only last for two to three days. For me, it will be much better and more sensible if they will just lower the prices of gasoline)," Clark, a 27-year-old delivery rider, explained.
The mayor explained the city had first distributed fuel subsidies to tricycle drivers last March 17, followed by 2,629 transport network vehicle service drivers (TNVS) on March 24 and 2,488 jeepney drivers on March 25.
Meanwhile, a total of 3,989 motorcycle taxi drivers are set to receive the fuel subsidy on Saturday, March 28.
A total of P151,165,000 worth of fuel subsidy was allocated for the assistance program.
