MMC exempts vehicles delivering fuel, basic commodities from truck ban, number coding
The Metro Manila Council (MMC) announced that oil tankers and other vehicles used in the delivery of basic commodities are now exempted from the truck ban and the number coding scheme starting Tuesday, March 24, to expedite the transportation of such goods in Metro Manila.
Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) General Manager Nicolas Torre III made the announcement during the MMC meeting held at the MMDA Main Office in Pasig City, which was also attended by MMC President and San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora, MMDA Chairman Don Artes, and Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Sec. Vince Dizon.
The MMC explained the new mandate ensures the smooth delivery of basic products, particularly fuel, as part of the national government's efforts in mitigating the adverse economic effects of the ongoing Middle East conflict, which has brought severe oil-related challenges to the country and its economy, including record-high fuel price hikes and availability concerns.
"The MMC resolution has been approved, which means all field trucks will no longer be included in the number coding, as well as trucks transporting basic commodities," Torre said, noting that the resolution aims to alleviate the needs of the public amid the ongoing situation in the Middle East.
Toll discounts
On March 20, North Luzon Expressway (NLEX), South Luzon Expressway (SLEX), and Southern Tagalog Arterial Road (STAR) Tollway operators announced that motorists, particularly public utility vehicles (PUVs), public utility buses (PUBs), and trucks used for freight services, will enjoy discounted tolls for two months starting March 23 in response to rising fuel prices.
According to the Department of Transportation (DOTr), the discounts will be provided through a rebate system, which will be credited weekly to all qualified vehicles.
For PUVs under Class 1, which include both traditional and modern jeepneys, savings range from as low as P3 to as high as P18.
PUBs, classified under Class 2, can see savings between P5 and P47.
Meanwhile, trucks involved in logistics and the movement of essential goods may save P8 to P72, depending on the tollway.
