Far Eastern University breathed a sigh of relief after star player Gerz Petallo was spared from surgery following a right shoulder injury she sustained over the weekend in the UAAP Season 88 women’s volleyball tournament.
FEU head coach Tina Salak disclosed the development on Wednesday, March 18, adding that they are monitoring Petallo’s recovery at the moment.
“Pinakamagandang word na yon, ‘no surgery’, kaya happy na kami don,” said Salak. “But yung recovery, siyempre hindi pa natin alam.”
Petallo hurt her shoulder after an accidental collision with teammate Margare Encarnacion during their match against University of Santo Tomas, forcing her to leave the court and miss the rest of the match.
While there is no set timetable for Petallo’s recovery, Salak is hopeful the 5-foot-5 open spiker will be fit to return in their matchup against National University on Sunday, March 22.
“We’re targeting at least NU game… but no pressure to Gerz. Nasa kanya na yon, kung papaano nya i-handle yung situation, injury niya and also yung progress nya,” said Salak.
With Petallo sidelined, Faida Bakanke and Melody Pons stepped up to the occasion in their straights-set win over University of the East last Wednesday, March 18, that boosted them back to the win column with a 5-3 record.
“In a matter na wala nga si Gerz, nagkaroon kami ng few adjustments, kailangan namin siyang i-run through, because indefinite pa young balik niya,” said Salak.
“But we’re hoping na sa mga adjustments na gawin para maka-contribute ang lahat, and maging komportable sila don,” she added.
