'A Chorus Line' returns to the stage in Makati
Theatre Group Asia production marks the Broadway musical's 50th anniversary

The acclaimed Broadway musical "A Chorus Line" returns to the stage this month as Theatre Group Asia mounts a new production running from March 12 to 29 at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater.
During a press preview on March 5 at the Samsung Theater in Circuit Makati, the production team and cast shared details of the upcoming staging, directed and choreographed by Emmy Award winner Karla Puno Garcia.
The production commemorates the 50th anniversary of the musical, which tells the stories of performers auditioning for a coveted spot in a Broadway chorus line. The show is widely regarded as a landmark in musical theater, earning the Pulitzer Prize for Drama as well as several Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Direction and Best Choreography.
Leading the cast are Tony Award nominee and two-time Grammy Award nominee Conrad Ricamora as Zach and Filipino American Broadway performer Lissa DeGuzman as Cassie.
The production assembled its ensemble through an international casting search spanning New York and several Philippine cities, culminating in an intensive Manila boot camp under Garcia’s direction.

Also joining the cast are Anyah Therese de Guzman as female swing and Franco Joaquin Ramos as male swing. Completing the lineup are Winchester Lopez as Tom, Jim Andrew Ferrer as Butch, Rofe Villarino as Victor, Vince Denzel Sarra as Roy, Paulina Luzuriaga as Tricia and Anna Del Prado as Lois Dillettente.
Behind the scenes, the creative team reflects the production’s international scope. Jamie Wilson serves as associate director, while JM Cabling, an Asian Cultural Council grantee for dance, is associate choreographer.
Set design is by Miguel Urbino, whose work spans London and New York, while New York-based designer Kat Ibasco leads costume design. Lighting design is by Cha See, the first Filipina to head lighting design for a major Broadway production with "Oh, Mary!," while sound design is by Megumi Katayama, whose recent credits include work with New York City Center’s "Encores!" series. Music director Farley Asuncion leads the production’s musical direction, bringing Marvin Hamlisch’s score to life.
Performances are scheduled Thursdays and Fridays at 7:30 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available through TicketWorld, with prices ranging from P900 to P5,500.
