P237-M 'counterfeit goods' seized in Binondo, Manila -- NBI

More than P237 million worth of “counterfeit goods” have been seized by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) during raids conducted in Binondo, Manila.

The NBI said the “fake products” were confiscated during the service of warrants by the bureau’s Intellectual Property Rights Division (NBI-IPRD) against retail outlets inside a shopping mall in Binondo last March 2 and 3.

It said it acted on information that there were large-scale distribution counterfeit products.

Last March 2, it also said a total of 2,820 pieces of counterfeit Louis Vuitton items were confiscated. “The total estimated market value of the confiscated goods is placed at approximately P217,470,489.60, marking a significant blow to the local trade of fraudulent luxury goods,” it added.

Last March 3, the NBI said its operatives seized counterfeit merchandise bearing the Longchamp trademark.

“The seizure included 2,316 assorted bags, eight coin purses, and two wallets, with a combined estimated value of approximately P20,900,000,” it said.

The NBI said the production, sale, and distribution of fake items constitute a direct violation of Republic Act No. 8293, the Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines.

It stressed that the operation against counterfeit products is its commitment to upholding the law and protecting the rights of legitimate brand owners within the Philippine market.
