The Department of Education (DepEd) will fully implement its strengthened Senior High School (SHS) curriculum in School Year (SY) 2026–2027, marking a major shift in the country’s basic education program.
Beginning in June 2026, DepEd’s Strengthened SHS Curriculum will replace the previous four-track system with only two tracks: Academic and Technical-Professional (TechPro).
The revised curriculum will also streamline core subjects to just five as part of the agency’s push to decongest learning content, sharpen foundational competencies, and better align graduates’ skills with higher education and workforce demands.
As part of sweeping reforms aimed at improving foundational skills, learner flexibility, and workforce readiness, DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara announced in a memorandum dated February 27 that the revised curriculum will be fully implemented in Grade 11 starting SY 2026–2027.
“The Strengthened Senior High School Curriculum introduces key structural, instructional, and content reforms to foster mastery of foundational skills, enhance learner choice based on ability and aspirations, and improve workforce readiness,” Angara said.
“These changes are designed to ensure that learners acquire relevant skills and competencies aligned with the demands of higher education, middle-skills development, employment, and entrepreneurship,” he added.
Successful pilot testing
The nationwide rollout, Angara said, follows the successful implementation of the pilot program in over 800 schools during the current academic year.
Based on positive results, DepEd has directed all public and private senior high schools to adopt the new curriculum for incoming Grade 11 students. Grade 12 learners in SY 2026–2027 will continue under the existing SHS curriculum to ensure a smooth transition.
“All public and private SHSs are directed to implement the Strengthened SHS Curriculum for incoming Grade 11 learners starting SY 2026–2027, while Grade 12 learners in SY 2026–2027 shall continue to take the existing SHS curriculum,” Angara said.
Major changes in the SHS curriculum
One of the most significant reforms is the streamlining of core subjects from 15 to just five integrated learning areas.
Instead of treating disciplines separately, the new structure combines related competencies and offers them throughout the academic year to promote deeper, interdisciplinary learning.
Based on the Strengthened SHS Program Shaping Paper released in 2025, the redesigned curriculum aligns more closely with higher education standards, middle-level skills development, employment, and entrepreneurship.
The five core subjects under the Strengthened SHS Curriculum are: Effective Communication / Mabisang Komunikasyon; Life and Career Skills; General Mathematics; General Science; and Pag-aaral ng Kasaysayan at Lipunang Pilipino.
More on-the-job training, apprenticeship
Angara earlier revealed that SHS students will undergo expanded on-the-job training (OJT) and apprenticeship hours following requests from industry partners seeking job-ready graduates.
The move, DepEd said, supports Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to prioritize improving the employability of senior high school graduates.
Nationwide preparations underway
DepEd has directed regional and division offices to begin necessary preparations, including curriculum mapping and academic planning; operational adjustments; orientation sessions for school leaders and teachers; coordination with industry and higher education partners; and technical assistance packages and training modules for core subjects and electives will also be made available online for both public and private school teachers.
Angara noted that implementation guidelines for the Strengthened SHS Curriculum will be issued through subsequent DepEd issuances, including guidance on offering the Academic or Technical-Professional (TechPro) tracks, as well as additional TechPro electives.
With full implementation set for June 2026, DepEd expressed optimism that the Strengthened SHS Curriculum will mark a major step in making the K to 12 program more responsive to higher education requirements and the evolving demands of the Philippine labor market.
