Malacañang said there is currently no discussion about the Philippines' return to the International Criminal Court (ICC).
"There is no discussion on plan of rejoining the ICC, as of this date," Palace Press Officer and Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro said when sought for comment on Tuesday, Feb. 24.
It came a day after lawmakers filed separate resolutions urging the Philippine government to rejoin the ICC, which is currently handling the charges of crimes against humanity against former president Rodrigo Duterte.
Duterte ordered in 2018 the withdrawal of the Philippines from its membership in the ICC, following the international tribunal’s preliminary investigation into the drug war.
Cases against Duterte were filed before the ICC in 2017 in relation to the killings during the implementation of his administration's bloody war on drugs.
In 2024, President Marcos said that the Philippines was studying whether it could rejoin the ICC and what the country’s options were. However, since then, there has been no further discussion on the matter.
