The Department of Justice (DOJ) on Friday, Feb. 20, welcomed the decision of President Marcos to appoint lawyer Melvin Matibag as director of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).
“We welcome Atty. Matibag’s appointment and we look forward to working closely with him and the NBI,” the DOJ said in a statement.
Last Thursday, Feb. 19, Malacanang announced the appointment of Matibag who previously served as secretary general of PDP-Laban and Cabinet secretary under the administration of former president Rodrigo R. Duterte.
Following the announcement, outgoing NBI Acting Director Angelito DLP. Magno expressed his gratitude for having served briefly as head of the law enforcement agency.
“Serving as Director of the National Bureau of Investigation has been both an honor and a profound responsibility,” Magno said.
“I am deeply grateful to the dedicated agents and personnel who stood with me in upholding our mandate,” he added.
The President appointed Magno as head of the bureau last Dec. 3, 2025 to replace former director Jaime B. Santiago who tendered his resignation.
