BACOLOD CITY – A soldier was killed and another was injured in a series of encounters with the New People’s Army (NPA) in Barangay Santo Niño, Tanjay City, Negros Oriental on Sunday, Feb. 15.
Brig. Gen. Jason Jumawan, commander of the 302nd Infantry Brigade (IBde), said the fatality was a corporal from Tapaz, Capiz, from the 11th Infantry Battalion (IB). His identity was withheld as his family is on their way to Negros Oriental to claim his remains.
Jumawan said troops were patrolling in response to reports from residents about the alleged presence of an armed group extorting food and promoting propaganda in the area in the past two weeks.
The first encounter broke out at 5:35 a.m. when remnants of the dismantled Southeast Front fired at soldiers.
It was followed by three more clashes at 6:30 a.m., 7 a.m., and 7:14 a.m.
Jumawan said the fatality was killed and his colleague was wounded in the 7 a.m. gun battle.
Jumawan said that only four remnants of Southeast Front are existing but they are reinforced by the Southwest Front from Negros Occidental to recover their lost mass base.
He added that the Southwest Front is responsible for the alleged liquidation of civilians, including the recent killing of a 74-year-old grandmother in Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental.
“That’s why we’re running after this group to stop these killings,” Jumawan said.
He said the remains of the slain soldier will be transported to his hometown.
Jumawan also visited the injured soldier, a private first class, who was later discharged from the hospital.
The soldier did not sustain a bullet injury but was hit by stones in the encounter site near a cliff.
Jumawan said that no residents were displaced as the skirmishes did not last for more than 10 minutes. “There’s no need for them to evacuate. We made sure the firefight does not happen in a populated area to prevent civilians from the danger,” he added.
He said they are verifying NPA casualties as bloodstains were seen in the encounter sites.
