Singer-actress Sharon Cuneta-Pangilinan drew laughter during a performance after making a light political remark about President Marcos’ vice presidential choice while appearing at an event in Intramuros.
Speaking onstage before the President, who was seated beside First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, Cuneta teased him about the 2022 election ticket and pointed to her husband, Sen. Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan, as her own vice president.
“I am happy to be here, Sir. And Sir, I have only one vice president—there—my date tonight,” she said, pointing to Pangilinan during the event dubbed “An Evening with the Stars: A Gala Celebrating the Stars Who Continue to Light Our Way,” on Thursday evening, Feb. 12.
“Mali your choice, no?” she added, drawing laughter from the audience.
Cuneta then quickly shifted the moment back to the program.
“Okay, okay. Let’s move on,” she said.
Her remark came amid political tensions between Marcos and Vice President Sara Duterte, his former UniTeam running mate during the 2022 national elections.
Marcos and Duterte defeated the tandem of former vice president Leni Robredo and Pangilinan in 2022, although Cuneta had publicly supported the latter pair.
Cuneta later expressed support for the President, saying she would continue to pray for him and for the country.
“Basta, Mr. President, you have my support. I will pray for you, I will pray for the country,” she said.
“I will pray that before we all judge you, that you’re allowed to do your job for all of us,” she added.
The Mega Star also wished the President well amid the spread of misinformation.
“We pray for your good health, peace of mind from all the fake news, all the disinformation. May God be with you every single day, Mr. President,” Cuneta said.
The event gathered performers and public figures for an evening program in Intramuros, where Cuneta delivered musical numbers alongside her onstage remarks.
Just an opinion
Responding to questions in a press briefing on Friday, Feb. 13, Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Undersecretary Claire Castro said the President did not react beyond smiling.
“Kung iyon po ang opinyon ni Ate Shawie, ni Ms. Sharon Cuneta, at malamang karamihan sa ating mga kababayan ay iyan din po ang nararamdaman. So, opinyon po iyon ni Ms. Sharon Cuneta (If that is the opinion of Ate Shawie, Ms. Sharon Cuneta — and perhaps many of our countrymen feel the same — that is her opinion),” she said.
“Nakita po natin na napangiti lamang ang ating Pangulo (We saw that the President simply smiled),” she added.
Asked whether the President agreed or disagreed with the remark, Castro said he did not comment on the matter.
“Wala po. Nagandahan lamang po siya sa awiting ‘Bituing Walang Ningning’ (None. He only appreciated the song ‘Bituing Walang Ningning’),” she added.
