President Marcos will undertake a working visit to New York from March 8 to 11 to participate in United Nations (UN) engagements, Malacañang announced Monday, Feb. 9.
In a press briefing, Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Undersecretary Claire Castro announced that the President will attend the opening of the 70th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW). The CSW session is scheduled from March 9 to 20.
Marcos is likewise expected to deliver a message at a special session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA).
According to Castro, the trip will also include meetings with United Nations officials as part of the Philippines’ participation in multilateral discussions.
The Commission on the Status of Women is the UN’s principal intergovernmental body dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women, convening annually at UN headquarters.
The 70th session gathers representatives of member states, civil society groups, and international organizations to review progress on women’s rights and shape global standards and policies on gender equality.
Marcos’ attendance marks the Philippines’ participation in the opening proceedings, where national leaders typically outline commitments and priorities related to women’s empowerment and development.
Meanwhile, special sessions of the UNGA bring together member states to address issues of global concern and provide a platform for heads of state to articulate national positions and policy directions.
President Marcos’ upcoming trip comes after the diverticulitis diagnosis that prevented him from attending public events for two weeks.
The President first attended the UNGA in 2022 during his first year in office, where he highlighted climate action, food security, and respect for international law. He was supposed to attend last year but skipped it for the third time to focus on domestic events.
