AUDIOJUNKIE: Bruce Springsteen: Meeting the moment

Published Feb 2, 2026 10:56 am
America is facing an existential crisis.
You’ve heard the news. First week, Jan. 7, Renee Good, a 37-year-old mom, was fatally shot by ICE agent Jonathan Ross, which sparked more protests in an already tense situation in the city of Minneapolis. Then, on the 24th of Jan., another fatal shooting occurred, this time of Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse. Tackled to the ground and shot several times in the back. Both of these horrific moments were caught on camera for the world to see.

And while the heated politics of the day dragged its feet as both sides pointed the blame at one another, some people just couldn't take it sitting down and took action in the only way they knew how.
Armed with an acoustic guitar and a sharp lyrical wit honed over decades of writing songs on hit albums played for millions of listeners both on record and for a live audience, Bruce Springsteen is once again a man meeting the moment.
Early this past week, Springsteen released “Streets of Minneapolis.” A song that encapsulates into music what happened and what is still happening in this particular American city.
Opening with: “Through the winter’s ice and cold / Down Nicollet Avenue / A city aflame fought fire and ice / ‘neath an occupier’s boots,” instantly transports the listeners to where the action is at. Jumping a few stanzas ahead, Springsteen intones in that easily recognizable drawl: “Against smoke and rubber bullets / In the dawn’s early light / Citizens stood for justice / Their voices ringin’ through the night.” It's the same gravelly voice that sang “Dancing in the Dark,” “Thunder Road,” and other beloved songs through the decades.
We expect nothing of The Boss. Bruce Springsteen is the kind of songwriter who writes about what is happening around him. A chronicler of the times. And he’s no stranger to protest songs. While political events or celebrations like the American Independence Day like to blast out his song “Born in the U.S.A.” to galvanize a sense of patriotism, the song is actually a four-minute-thirty-nine-second rock treatise. A withering rebuke about the betrayal of the American working class and veterans of the Vietnam War.

And Springsteen has always written about ‘places.’ With titles such as “Streets of Philadelphia,” “Nebraska,” “Atlantic City,” and “New York City Serenade,” just to name a few, Springsteen has always been a keen observer and writes strongly about what he feels. Have you watched the 2025 biopic “From Out Of Nowhere” starring Jeremy Allen White? A seemingly long sit-through, but yeah, the man is intensely creative. So we can say “Streets of Minneapolis” is really just Springsteen being Springsteen. What we’re seeing is a legendary artist using his platform to send out a message. A rather pressing message that says: ‘Pay attention to what’s happening to our country right now. Another line in the new song goes: “Our city’s heart and soul persists / through broken glass and bloody tears / on the streets of Minneapolis / Oh, our Minneapolis. I hear your voice / singing through the bloody mist / here in our home, they killed and roamed / in the winter of ‘26.”
And the music? Classic E Street Band sound: Jangly guitars, wheezing organs, with gospel-tinged anthemic choruses thrown in. Americana filtered through Bruce Springsteen's lens. It’s about time for an artist of his caliber to create something about this particular time, as it happens anyway, so yeah, the man is meeting said moment head-on.
Since its release, “Streets of Minneapolis” has reached Number One in 19 territories on a major streaming platform.
He’s not called ‘The Boss’ for nothing.
