BACOLOD CITY – A New People’s Army (NPA) rebel was killed in a clash with soldiers in Barangay Bi-ao, Binalbagan, Negros Occidental on Friday, Jan. 30.
Lt. Col. Zeigfred Tayaban, 94th Infantry Battalion commander, said the fatality was identified by his former comrades as Dante, a resident of Barangay Buenavista, Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental.
Tayaban said that Dante was described by his former comrades as the finance and logistics officer of the dismantled Central Negros 2 (CN2) and also a member of the Regional Strike Force (RSF).
He was allegedly involved in extortion and harassment activities, as well as killings and burning of heavy equipment, in an attempt to revive the influence of the group, Tayaban said.
Dante was among the 10 remnants of CN2 that soldiers encountered at around 2:50 a.m. during a response to reports about an alleged extortion activity and presence of armed men in the area.
Tayaban said that an M16 rifle, several ammunition, and personal belongings were recovered from Dante. Pursuit operation is ongoing against fleeing rebels.
The remains of Dante will be turned over to the local government and the police for proper disposition.
Following the encounter, the barangay council ordered the suspension of classes in four elementary schools and a high school, as well as all day care centers on Friday.
These schools include Binadlan Elementary School, Bulwang Elementary School, Nasanagan Elementary School, Biao Elementary School, and Biao National High School.
The barangay stated in its executive order that this move was a precautionary measure for the safety of the learners and teachers due to the armed conflict.
Tayaban said that no residents were affected and displaced by the gunbattle.
