Malacañang once again dismissed speculation of an impending leadership change at the Department of Tourism (DOT), saying Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco continues to enjoy the full trust of President Marcos.
Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Undersecretary Claire Castro gave the assurance when asked about rumors circulating in the business sector that Frasco could be replaced.
“Yes, she still enjoys the trust of the President,” she said in her press briefing on Thursday, Jan. 29.
Castro’s statement came amid concerns over factors affecting visitor arrivals, including high domestic airfares to key destinations.
In a previous briefing, Castro said the Palace is aware of complaints that flights to local destinations such as Siargao are sometimes more expensive than travel to other ASEAN countries.
She explained then that the Department of Transportation (DOTr) has been addressing the issue, citing structural factors such as the use of smaller aircraft with higher per-passenger costs and fluctuating fuel prices.
Despite the challenges, the Palace has consistently said the administration remains focused on strengthening tourism through coordination among agencies rather than leadership changes.
The reaffirmation of Frasco’s standing comes amid renewed speculation that she would be removed as DOT secretary.
Early this month, the Palace denied reports that Frasco is facing removal and that aviation executive Stanley Ng will replace her following criticisms of her leadership.
Frasco has faced online criticism in recent years over the department’s campaigns and messaging, including the scrapped “Love the Philippines” tourism campaign in 2023. The DOT is currently being mocked for promotions that feature Frasco’s face and not the destinations themselves.
The DOT has brushed off criticisms and insists that its strategy is working based on its own numbers.
