Jimmy Bondoc denies acts of 'sedition, insurrection' in his Facebook post
Musician, songwriter, lawyer and former senatorial candidate Jimmy Bondoc asked the Department of Justice (DOJ) on Monday, Jan. 19, to dismiss the criminal charges filed against him in connection with his Facebook post.
The DOJ has started its preliminary investigation on the complaint filed by the Philippine National Police-Criminal Investigation Group (PNP-CIDG) which accused Bondoc of inciting to sedition, inciting to insurrection, and insurrection in violation of the Revised Penal Code (RPC).
The charges arose from Bondoc’s Nov. 28, 2025 Facebook post that reads: “Republic of Mindanao coming soon.”
“Mali po sila kasi po alam naman po natin na ang freedom of speech is very valuable (They are wrong to file the case because we all know that freedom of speech is very valuable),” Bondoc told journalists after filing his counter-affidavit.
While he professed that he respects the complainant, he pointed out that “hindi po pwede na lahat na lang po ng mga maliliit na ungot ng mga taong bayan sa Facebook ay sasampahan ng kasong ganito (they cannot file cases against every little thing that the people post in Facebook).”
He explained that his post was an acknowledgement “of apparently rising rumble of calls for secession.”
He stressed that he is not calling for secession and “assuming I were, it is not immediately illegal because there are constitutional processes that allow it.”
