PNP mobilizes search, rescue teams in Cebu City as landfill landslide kills 1; 38 missing

Search and rescue teams were deployed by the Philippine National Police (PNP) in Cebu City following a landslide at a landfill that killed at least one individual while 38 others were still missing, a ranking official disclosed Friday, Jan. 9.
Police Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr., acting PNP chief, directed the Cebu City Police Office to provide manpower, security, and logistical support for search and rescue operations at the Binaliw landfill in in Sitio Kainsikan, Barangay Binaliw as authorities feared that those missing were buried underneath garbage and debris.
The lone fatality was a 22-year-old woman whose body was retrieved by rescue volunteers, police said.
Meanwhile, 12 individuals were rescued from the debris and rushed to hospitals for treatment.
The landslide occurred at a landfill operated byPrime Waste Solutions Landfill on Jan. 8, according to the Cebu City Police Office.
The PNP reported that the administrative office of the landfill was affected and that was where the majority of trapped individuals were being searched.
“My instruction is to focus first on search and rescue, secure the area, and ensure the safety of our responders and residents. We also ordered the establishment of police assistance desks and perimeter control to support other agencies on the ground,” Nartatez said.
Additional police forces were fielded on the ground to assist in crowd control and traffic management.
Nartatez also said that a parallel investigation by the Cebu City Police Office has been ordered to determine possible regulatory violations.
“It is clear that rescue operations remain the top priority. Once the situation stabilizes, we will look into possible factors such as compliance with safety and environmental regulations. If there are lapses or negligence, we will ensure that those responsible are held accountable under the law,” he said.
