CEBU CITY – Several persons were rescued in a landslide that hit a landfill in Barangay Binaliw here on Thursday afternoon, Jan. 8.
Nine persons were rescued and taken to the hospital as of 7 p.m.
The landfill was operated by private company Prime Water Solution Inc.
City Councilor Joel Garganera said the material recovery facility (MRF) of the company collapsed when a pile of garbage caved in at around 4 p.m.
Councilor Dave Tumulak said that there were about 20 workers in the facility.
Videos circulating online showed some residents shouting for help after their houses were buried by the pile of garbage.
Among those rushed to hospitals were survivors who suffered critical injuries.
The area was cordoned off while rescue operations were conducted.
Garbage collected from the cities of Mandaue and Cebu as well as from other areas are being dumped in the landfill.
