76 PNP-SAF members deployed at Sablayan Prison in Occidental Mindoro
Seventy-six members of the Philippine National Police-Special Action Forces (PNP-SAF) have been deployed at the Sablayan Prison and Penal Farm (SPPF) in Occidental Mindoro to beef up security, the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) said on Monday, March 3.
“The integration of these highly trained officers aims to further enhance the prison's security measures, particularly following directives from Justice Secretary Crispin ‘Boying’ Remulla regarding the transfer of inmates with drug-related convictions to SPPF,” the BuCor said in a statement.
The bureau noted that BuCor Deputy Director for Operations Gil Toralba was at the SPPF to welcome the arrival of the SAF.
While in SPPF, Toralba led an operation for the search of contraband inside the prison facility.
“The operation yielded significant results, with authorities confiscating nine assorted cellphones, tobacco products including one rim and two packs of cigarettes, several cellphone chargers, and sixteen assorted bladed weapons,” the BuCor said.
It said the operation was also participated by members of the PNP, Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).
“These proactive measures underscore the Bucor’s commitment to maintaining order and improving security protocols within penal facilities,” it also said.
“The collaboration among various law enforcement agencies reflects a united front in addressing issues related to contraband and ensuring a safer environment for both staff and persons deprived of liberty,” it added.
The BuCor has been transferring persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) from the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City which will be closed down by 2028.
