Although the digital age has brought convenience, sadly, it also opened doors to increasingly sophisticated scams. Shopee strongly warns the public about the rise of sophisticated task and prize scams targeting users through SMS and messaging apps.   These two common scams are designed to trick users into financial loss and identity theft.   

Task and prize scams are prevalent.  Understanding how these scams work is important to protect oneself.

Money is the primary weapon used by task scammers. They often lure individuals in with the promise of easy money and enticing part-time or full-time job opportunities. Shopee warns that these scammers frequently impersonate representatives of legitimate Shopee entities, such as Shopee Mall or their HR Recruitment Team.  Shopee reminds us to be cautious.  Do not fall for these schemes especially when they start demanding monetary transfers while falsely promising significant financial rewards in return.  Always verify any offers directly with the company through their official channels.

The allure of winning something for nothing is what prize scams are.  Watch out for messages informing you that you've won a prize or reward even though you never entered any contest. Genuine Shopee contest winners are only announced within the Shopee app or through Shopee's verified social media channels.   Do not click on suspicious links or messages that contain a link to claim a prize.  These links often lead to phishing websites designed to steal your personal information.

To ensure a safe and secure online experience, Shopee urges users to take these precautions:

• As mentioned above, Shopee doesn't solicit payments for employment.  Never send money for job opportunities.
• Do not click on prize links sent via SMS or messaging apps.  Verify only within the official Shopee app.
• Never share personal information including name, address, age, contact number or bank details with unknown senders.  Keep PIN, OTP, and account passwords strictly confidential.
• Conduct all Shopee transactions within the app itself to ensure secure payments, clear communication, order tracking and access to Shopee's buyer's protection program.
