Sourdough Cafe now has a third branch on the second floor of the Proscenium Retail Row at Rockwell Makati. My eldest son, Quintin, lives in Quezon City and has eaten at their Tomas Morato cafe, declaring it one of his go-to spots in the area when he’s looking for comfort food. He’s happy with their small plates, sandwiches, pizza, and pasta—all uniformly sourdough-inspired. Another Sourdough Cafe is on Perea Street in Legazpi Village, Makati.

The cafe is proud of its home-baked sourdough, and I liked how, when we were seated, they served us rose-colored sourdough. It was part of their Valentine weekend beetroot sourdough production and showed how they can be creative and whimsical within the parameters of their specialty. The menu isn’t ambitious or challenging but offers an array of steady favorites and familiar dishes. What Sourdough Cafe does is make sure it’s done right, with little tweaks here and there.

Beef salpicao

For their little plates, we chose the Drunken Chorizo, served with garlic, wine, and onions. This one was a safe choice, and they delivered. The beef salpicao, is USDA Beef, with garlic confit and paprika. Its tender morsels of beef, and my youngest, Luca, gave it his two thumbs up.

Roasted cauliflower soup

The Fresh Aklan Oysters, Rockefeller Style, had the right flavors and ingredients, but could have used a little more time of baking, if one their oyster topping on the slightly burnt side. I was also looking for more of the spinach and breadcrumbs. The Cauliflower Soup, slow roasted cauliflower and ham was tasty and a hearty starter.

Salmon and spinach organic spaghetti

Under their organic spaghetti pasta dishes, we picked their salmon and spinach, with cherry tomatoes. My boys and I agreed that this was clear cut winner of the lunch. Nice generous pieces of salmon mixed with the spinach, and with the lemon wedge adding flavor to the dish. I’m now curious about their other dishes for our next visit, and I’m eyeing the lemon and prawns, with tiger prawns, chili flakes, garlic, and basil. And their vongole with clams.

Classic carbonara

Luca also ordered their Classic Carbonara; hand made pasta with guanciale, grana padano, and parmesan. Nice and safe; but I couldn’t help but compare it to the salmon and spinach. Saw their listing of Sourdough Sandwiches:  beef pastrami, Trio Formaggi, and grilled chicken, and those are something I look forward to trying in the near future.

Took home their whole wheat sourdough, and that’ll be on my breakfast menu throughout the week. Welcome to the neighborhood, Sourdough Cafe.
