PH, UAE sign treaties on extradition, mutual legal assistance, transfer of prisoners
The Philippines and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have signed treaties on extradition, mutual legal assistance in criminal matters (MLA) and transfer of sentenced persons (TSP).
Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary Jesus Crispin C. Remulla signed the three treaties on behalf of the Philippine government during the World Government Summit held in Dubai, UAE from Feb. 11 to 13.
“These treaties are more than just documents, they represent our shared commitment to justice, the rule of law, and international security,” Remulla said during the signing.
“They reflect our nations’ resolve that crime shall not escape accountability, victims shall not be denied justice, and legal cooperation shall transcend borders,” he said.
He explained that the extradition treaty will ensure that “fugitives cannot escape justice by crossing borders as it establishes clear procedures for extradition requests and safeguards the rights of individuals, while reinforcing our nations’ commitment to holding criminals accountable.”
“With this agreement, we send a strong message: crime knows no sanctuary, and justice will be served wherever it is due,” he declared.
Remulla said the MLA “strengthens legal collaboration between our countries.”
“It enables the exchange of evidence, the freezing of assets, and the coordination of law enforcement actions, ensuring that our respective justice systems work seamlessly together,” he said.
On the other hand, Remulla said the TSP “reflects our dedication to human justice.”
The TSP “allows convicted individuals to serve their sentences in their home country, closer to their families and support systems, reinforcing our shared commitment to rehabilitation, reintegration, and the protection of human dignitary," he explained.
He cited that the two countries have shared a deep and enduring relationship with over 600,000 Filipinos contributing to UAE’s economy and society.
