The driver of the multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) who hit a construction worker who was also run over by a 16-wheeler truck in Antipolo City on Tuesday, Feb. 11, has surrendered to authorities.
On Wednesday, Feb. 13, Antipolo City Mayor Jun Ynares said that the driver voluntarily surrendered to explain his side and to ask for forgiveness from the victim's family.
“Ayon sa driver, buong akala nya ay truck ang tinamaan ng kanyang side mirror kaya hindi na niya ito pinansin (According to the driver, he initially thought his side mirror had only struck a truck, so he did not pay it any attention),” Ynares said.
“Nalaman na lang niya ito ng makita sa post nung hatinggabi kaya agad syang nakipag-ugnayan para harapin ang nangyari (He only realized what had happened after seeing a social media post at midnight, prompting him to come forward and take responsibility),” the mayor added.
Ynares said that the driver apologized to the victim’s family which was accepted. No charges will be pursued against him.
He added that the 16-wheeler truck driver, who was initially detained, has also been released after reaching a settlement with the family.
The mayor reminded the public to be more careful, saying, “Maging paalala din sana ito sa lahat na palagiang mag-ingat para sa ating kaligtasan gayon din sa iba (Let this be a reminder to everyone to always be careful for our safety and the safety of others).”
