At Café K in Makati, mindful eating offers a welcome reset after the season's excesses

The long-awaited period of merriment has just passed, and many of us spent the past weeks throwing caution to the wind, enjoying family reunions, office parties, vacations, and other gatherings, all naturally highlighted by food, spirits, late nights and skipped physical activity.
That festive feasting often leads to predictable, yet avoidable, physical consequences. As the new year begins, we may feel less toned or energetic than usual, and our digestive and metabolic systems often call for a return to mindful attention.
At the root of this is the cumulative stress of the season, from gift shopping and holiday meals to family obligations and work requirements. The first and most obvious victim is the body. Irregular hours, alcohol consumption, year-end deadlines, and worsening traffic meant many nights ended close to midnight, with only a few hours left to rest before repeating the cycle the next day.
Brilliant solution
Toward the end of the holidays, a simple solution came to my attention when a niece had to spend several days running around Makati pursuing business leads. I expected her home late, bedraggled and short-tempered from the usual search for a ride and the long wait for a Grab cab. Instead, she was calm, cool and collected. She had avoided the familiar high-fat, high-sodium fast-food stop, opting instead for a salad paired with a high-protein, low-fat dinner highlighted by salad greens harvested just hours before. Sourdough bread and quinoa provided fiber and carbs.
Eating healthy means a great deal to her and the rest of her family, where I am currently staying. Her discovery, Café K, has a house nutritionist overseeing the menu, attracting health-conscious professionals seeking comfort and quiet in the midst of bustling Salcedo Village in Makati City.
“Café K is for people who appreciate the small luxuries of daily life, like good food, good company, and good energy,” says Café K Director of Operations Kevin Lim. Café K is grounded in embracing what nourishment and wellness mean. “We think of professionals on a quick break or creatives seeking calm. Then there are fitness-minded regulars, parents, friends reconnecting or anyone who wants a place that feels both thoughtfully designed and welcoming,” Kevin says when asked who he sees dining at Café K.
“Our duty doesn’t end with just having the macros and the kcal listed on the menu, but we want to be part of the movement where conscious dining is our thing,” says Kitchen Manager and Registered Dietitian Dan Pambid. Café K offers grounded, everyday meals without ever feeling restrictive or being “diet food.” The dishes are designed to be properly portioned, ensuring there is still room for dessert.
Chefs who live the lifestyle
Executive Chef Carlos Lanzona, a three-time Philippines’ Strongest Man, creates dishes shaped by fitness principles, nutrition knowledge, and professional technique. “Without being too gimmicky, fresh produce and locally sourced ingredients done with good technique can still be amazing,” says Chef Carlos, who notes that Café K’s menu features mostly homegrown ingredients, reflecting its commitment to supporting the local community. The restaurant’s most popular dishes remain its rice bowls and mains. “They reflect the soul of Café K: generous protein, fresh sides, balanced flavors and comforting composition,” Kevin adds.

Café K balances comfort food with mindful preparation at a price point that encourages repeat visits, whether for a quick solo meal or a gathering with friends and loved ones. As Chef Carlos puts it, “We love food, and we make dishes as reasonably priced as possible without losing any joy.”
The chic, spacious setting extends to a carefully curated wine selection that treats balance and pleasure as part of wellness. “A beautiful glass of wine can be part of a life well-lived,” Kevin says. “It’s never about excess, but about enjoying moments that make a day feel complete.” Café K also offers private dining with bespoke menus and curated wine pairings.
As the new year begins, Café K continues to host private events and exhibits. Recently, The Art House produced “Frames of a Memory,” featuring collaborative works by Cruz and Pestana displayed throughout the space. The limited-edition series explores how memories fade, shift and return, inspired by actress and philanthropist Nadine Lustre.
