Communist fighter killed in Northern Samar encounter
TACLOBAN CITY – A member of the New People’s Army (NPA) was killed in a clash with soldiers in Barangay Gusaran, Silvino Lobos town, Northern Samar province on Wednesday.
The Philippine Army (PA) said the 30-minute gun battle started at around 6:57 a.m. following a tip from a concerned citizen who reported the rebels’ extortion and other illegal activities.
Recovered from the encounter site were one M16 rifle, two magazines, backpacks, a bandolier, personal items, and subversive documents.
The 8th Infantry Division (ID) described the encounter as a “crushing blow” against remnants of the sub-regional committee Emporium of the NPA Eastern Visayas Regional Party Committee.
“The operation was launched following persistent reports about armed individuals in the area who were conducting extortion activities and coercing farmers to surrender portions of their harvested crops. These threats disrupted local livelihoods and created fear among communities dependent on subsistence farming,” the 8th ID said.
Brig. Gen. Carmelito Pangatungan, commander of the 803rd Brigade, lauded the civilian informant and operating troops, emphasizing the military's commitment to protecting communities and maintaining peace in Northern Samar.
“This operation clearly shows that civilians no longer tolerate the hardships inflicted by the communist terrorist group,” Pangatungan said.
He urged residents, especially those in remote communities, to continue cooperating with authorities to help end local insurgency.
Pangatungan appealed to remaining NPA members to surrender and avail themselves of government assistance programs aimed at reintegration and livelihood support.
The PA said they will continue its intensified operations to track down the remaining NPA combatants in Northern Samar and dismantle their presence in the region. (PNA)
