CEBU CITY – Police will be on heightened alert for a prayer-march rally that will be participated by various groups here on Sunday, Nov. 30.
The event, called the Sugboanong Pakigbisog Kontra Korapsyon (SuPaKK), is anticipated to attract at least 5,000 participants, who will gather at Fuente Osmena Circle.
According to Monsignor Rey Peñagunda, Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Cebu, said the event will start with a Mass at 2:30 p.m. at the Santo Niño Pilgrim Center. Participants will march toward Fuente Osmeña Circle after.
Peñagunda added that the program will include prayers, cultural presentations, and the reading of a unified declaration by coalition member groups.
Cebu Archbishop Albert Uy will deliver a recorded message to close the program and unify the coalition’s call.
Organizers emphasized that the event is non-partisan as participants were reminded not to display political colors.
Police Brig. Gen. Redrico Maranan, Police Regional Office-Central Visayas chief, said all police stations in the region will be on full alert as the event in Cebu will coincide with the Trillion Peso March at the Epifanio delos Santos Ave. People Power Monument in Quezon City.
Maranan said raising the alert status is meant to ensure public safety.
“Our priority is the safety of every commuter and every family enjoying the long weekend. We want people to move freely and safely, without fear or disruption,” Maranan said.
Intelligence personnel and Civil Disturbance Management personnel will be on standby.
Police Col. George Ylanan, chief of the Cebu City Police Office, said at least 200 personnel will be deployed to secure the protest rally.
