Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero lauded President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. for pursuing evidence-based investigations on the issue of flood control budget irregularities.
Escudero made the commendation on Tuesday, November 25 during the Senate plenary deliberations on the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) budget, where Secretary Vince Dizon stated that the governmetn has chosen to follow the evidence wherever it leads, even when politically sensitive.
“I congratulate the administration because they did not follow and resort to any script or zarswela to divert the real culprits as I said when I last stood up and spoke here in the Senate,” Escudero said.
“According to Secretary Dizon himself, all they are following, based on the order of President Marcos, is where the evidence took them,” he stressed.
Earlier, the Ombudsman filed corruption and malversation charges before the Sandiganbayan against former Ako Bicol Rep. Zaldy Co, former DPWH Undersecretary Wilfredo Bernardo, former DPWH Bulacan 1st District Engineer Henry Alcantara, former DPWH Bulacan 1st District Assistant Engineer Brice Hernandez, and directors of Sunwest Corporation in connection with flood control project anomalies.
On the other hand, the Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI), which President Marcos has mandated to lead the investigations, has turned over documents to the Office of the Ombudsman in relation to the role of former House Speaker and Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez in the anomalies to determine possible administrative or criminal accountability under the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act, the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards, and other applicable laws.
Escudero praised the administration for its determination to uphold justice, even when investigations touch close to home, noting that the President’s directive to “follow the evidence” has ensured that accountability is pursued consistently and without diversion.
“I know this decision was not easy for President Marcos when he learned that his cousin was possibly involved,” he said.
“So, I applaud his determination to hold those who are truly responsible accountable, and his opposition to any diversion because many innocent people have already been implicated in this attempted diversion,” he further said.
